Bulk cargo

What is bulk cargo?

Bulk cargo refers to shipments consisting of individual packages that are transported together with other shipments within the transport network. Typical bulk cargo includes palletized goods, cartons, crates, or other loadable units that are too small to be transported as a full load on their own.

In general bulk logistics, numerous individual shipments from various shippers are collected, sorted, and consolidated at transfer points and then transported further via a network of local and long-haul transport. This allows even smaller shipment volumes to be transported economically without requiring a full truckload or direct transport.

From a logistical perspective, bulk cargo is particularly relevant for companies that regularly ship medium or small shipments and wish to benefit from standardized transport networks. At the same time, with each additional transshipment point, the requirements for labeling, handling quality, and transit time management increase. Therefore, precise planning and transparent shipment tracking are particularly important in bulk cargo logistics.

Bulk cargo is thus a central concept in transport logistics and forms the basis for many groupage and network transport operations in both domestic and international freight shipping.
