What is a hub-and-spoke system?
Many modern logistics networks are not structured as direct point-to-point connections, but instead follow a centralized distribution model. This is precisely where the hub-and-spoke system comes into play: flows of goods from various points of origin—the so-called spokes—are first bundled to a central hub, where they are transshipped, sorted, or consolidated, and then transported onward to their respective destinations.
This network model is particularly significant in transport logistics, distribution logistics, and international supply chains because it systematically structures transport operations and reduces the number of direct connections between individual locations. Instead of serving each route separately, shipments are first routed through a central hub. This allows for better utilization of transport capacity, the bundling of routes, and the standardization of operational processes within the network.
The hub-and-spoke system is particularly advantageous in complex distribution structures with many shipping and receiving points. It helps companies optimize transport routes, centrally manage handling processes, and reduce costs per shipment. At the same time, the predictability of goods flows often improves, as the network is organized via clearly defined main and secondary routes. Typical applications include parcel services, freight forwarders, spare parts logistics, e-commerce, and large-scale national and international distribution networks.
However, this model also places higher demands on operational control. Since many goods flows pass through a central transshipment point, the performance of the entire network depends heavily on the efficiency of the hub, the scheduling of transport runs, and the quality of time slot planning. If delays occur there, this can have an immediate impact on downstream transports and overall delivery performance. That is why hub-and-spoke systems are often combined today with digital solutions for transport management, network planning, and shipment tracking.
From a logistical perspective, the hub-and-spoke system is thus a proven approach for consolidating goods flows, designing scalable networks, and increasing the cost-effectiveness of distribution. It is particularly suitable for companies that coordinate many routes and wish to organize their transport structure in a centralized, efficient, and process-reliable manner.
