Just-in-Sequence (JIS)

What is Just-in-Sequence (JIS)?

When production supply involves not only the right timing but also the exact sequence in which parts are delivered, the term “Just-in-Sequence” (JIS) is used. This concept extends the Just-in-Time principle to include sequence-specific delivery: components arrive not only when needed but also in the exact order in which they are installed on the assembly line.

JIS is particularly widespread in the automotive industry and in other manufacturing environments with a high degree of product variety. There, seats, cockpits, bumpers, or other variant-dependent components often need to be provided in a specified sequence based on the vehicle or order. Upstream logistics must therefore precisely coordinate the production program, sequences, transport cycles, and delivery processes.

The major advantage of Just-in-Sequence lies in the reduction of the production workload. Assembly areas require less buffer space, search efforts are reduced, and material provision can be organized much more leanly. At the same time, the demands on data quality, delivery reliability, and transport coordination increase significantly, because even small deviations in the sequence can have immediate effects on the line.

JIS is thus a highly integrated supply concept at the interface of production logistics, inbound logistics, and transport control. When implemented correctly, it improves space utilization, process reliability, and efficiency in tightly synchronized production networks.
