Order picking

What is order picking?

Picking begins when orders are assembled in the warehouse. It refers to the process in which individual items, materials, or packaging units are removed from inventory in accordance with a customer, production, or shipping order and consolidated into a shipment or staging unit.

Picking is one of the core processes in warehouse and distribution logistics because it directly impacts error rates, turnaround times, and delivery quality. Typical tasks include identifying the correct items, retrieving them from designated storage locations, checking quantities and batches, and transferring them to packaging, staging, or shipping. Depending on the warehouse structure, various methods such as pick-by-scan, pick-by-voice, pick-by-light, or paperless picking are used.

From a logistical perspective, order picking is particularly relevant because it is labor- and time-intensive and thus has a significant impact on warehouse process costs. Long distances, unclear warehouse layouts, or error-prone processes quickly lead to incorrect deliveries, delays, or unnecessary extra work. Optimized picking processes, on the other hand, improve warehouse productivity, enhance order quality, and reduce fulfillment processing time.

Modern warehouse management systems support picking through route optimization, order prioritization, and transparent inventory data. This makes picking a key driver for efficient warehouse processes and high service quality in the supply chain.
