Order Processing

What is order processing?

In logistics and supply chain management, order processing refers to the entire operational and administrative process, from order entry and internal processing through to the on-time delivery of goods to the customer. It is a central component of the value chain and ensures that customer orders are processed efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with defined delivery times, service levels, and quality standards.

Key sub-processes of order fulfillment include order acceptance, order verification, availability checks, picking, packing, shipping processing, and handover to the respective transport service provider or freight forwarder. Depending on the company structure, order fulfillment may also include route planning, the preparation of shipping documents, shipment tracking, and communication with customers or trading partners. In industry, retail, and e-commerce, it is closely linked to areas such as warehouse logistics, inventory management, transport management, and customer service.

Efficient order fulfillment contributes significantly to delivery capability, on-time delivery, and customer satisfaction. At the same time, it influences key performance indicators such as lead time, error rate, inventory coverage, delivery performance, and logistics costs. Especially in complex delivery networks, the smooth processing of customer orders is only possible if processes are standardized, digitally controlled, and system-integrated—for example, via ERP, WMS, or TMS systems.

In practice, order processing is thus far more than mere order handling: it serves as the interface between sales, planning, warehousing, shipping, and transport logistics. Companies that optimize their order processing not only improve their operational efficiency but also reduce processing times, delivery delays, and process costs throughout the entire supply chain.
