What is pick-and-pack?
In the fulfillment process, pick-and-pack is one of the key operations linking inventory management and order fulfillment. This refers to the process in which items are first retrieved from storage locations (picking) and then packaged for shipment (packing) before being sent to customers, retail partners, or downstream locations. Pick-and-pack is a crucial component of fast and error-free order processing, particularly in warehouse logistics, e-commerce, distribution logistics, and spare parts logistics.
The process typically begins with a customer order or an internal shipping order. Based on this, the required items are identified in the warehouse, picked, and transferred to a packing station or shipping station for further processing. There, the items are consolidated, suitable packaging materials are selected, the items are securely packaged for transport, and—depending on the process design—labeling, document generation, and preparation for shipment also take place. The goal is to prepare orders correctly, completely, and efficiently for transport.
Especially in environments with high shipment volumes, pick-and-pack has a direct impact on key logistics metrics such as lead time, error rate, picking performance, shipping speed, and service quality. Inefficient pick-and-pack processes quickly lead to incorrect deliveries, unnecessary handling costs, higher packaging consumption, or delays in goods outbound. Conversely, optimized processes can significantly improve both warehouse productivity and customer satisfaction.
In practice, pick-and-pack is often supported by digital systems. Warehouse management systems (WMS), mobile data capture, scanning processes, pick-by-voice, pick-by-light, or automated packing stations help to control stock picks more precisely, reduce travel times, and standardize packaging processes. This is particularly relevant for companies that must manage many different items, high order frequencies, or complex shipping requirements.
From a logistical perspective, pick-and-pack is thus far more than just “picking and packing.” It is a critically important operational process in fulfillment that links inventory, order picking, packaging, and shipping, thereby contributing significantly to the efficiency of the entire supply chain.
