It begins even before the actual receipt of goods, as the selection of suitable procurement strategies, coordination with suppliers, and ensuring efficient delivery processes are also part of this functional area. In industrial companies, procurement logistics is closely integrated with purchasing, production planning, inventory management, materials management, and warehouse logistics.

Effective procurement logistics is crucial for avoiding material shortages, production interruptions, excess inventory, and unnecessary procurement costs. It significantly influences key performance indicators such as delivery readiness, procurement time, inventory range, capital tied up, warehousing costs, and supplier on-time delivery. Procurement logistics is gaining strategic importance, particularly in global and volatile supply networks, as long lead times, fluctuating availability, and increasing transportation requirements necessitate precise coordination of the upstream supply chain.

Modern procurement logistics relies on digital systems and data-driven processes, such as ERP systems, warehouse management systems (WMS), transport management systems (TMS), or integrated supply chain planning solutions. This enables early identification of demand, more reliable delivery date assurance, more transparent control of goods flows, and more efficient procurement processes.
