Production Logistics

What is production logistics?

Between procurement and shipping lies an area that is crucial for supplying production: production logistics. It manages all the logistical processes that move, provide, and secure materials, components, semi-finished goods, and finished products within and around the production area.

This includes, among other things, material provision to production lines and workstations, supplying assembly areas, internal transport, buffer and intermediate storage, the disposal of empty load carriers, and coordination with production planning, purchasing, and warehousing. The goal of production logistics is to make materials available in the correct quantity, quality, and sequence at the right point of use, without creating unnecessarily high inventories or supply gaps.

Especially in takt-based manufacturing environments, the quality of production logistics has a direct impact on output, equipment utilization, and on-time delivery. Missing parts, delayed deliveries, or unstable replenishment processes can disrupt entire production processes. Efficient production logistics therefore creates stable material flows, reduces search and wait times, and supports cost-effective management of production supply.

In many companies today, production logistics is digitally integrated with ERP systems, Kanban solutions, material flow control, and warehouse management systems. This makes it a central element in balancing production supply, inventory reduction, and operational process reliability.
