Shipper

What is a shipper?

In the transport chain, the shipper is the party from whom the shipment originates. This can include companies in manufacturing, retail, or e-commerce, as well as other organizations that dispatch goods and initiate the transport process. The shipper is thus a central starting point for logistics processes, as they determine which goods are to be transported, when, in what quantities, and under what conditions.

Typically, the shipper engages a freight forwarder, a carrier, or another transport company to carry out the shipments. However, their role is not limited to simply authorizing the shipment. In practice, the shipper often manages key aspects of the transport, such as pickup dates, delivery windows, packaging and load carrier requirements, shipment data, destinations, or specific guidelines for load securing, documentation, and transport quality. Depending on the company’s structure, coordination with warehousing, shipping, purchasing, production, or customer service is also part of the tasks related to shipping.

From a logistical perspective, the shipper is therefore more than just the sender of goods. They have a significant influence on how efficiently transports can be planned, consolidated, and executed. If shipment volumes, call-offs, time windows, and packaging specifications are managed effectively, transport costs can be reduced, vehicle utilization improved, and delivery deadlines met more reliably. Conversely, unclear or last-minute changes in the shipper’s requirements often lead to special trips, increased coordination efforts, or inefficient transport concepts.

The shipper’s role is particularly relevant in complex delivery networks with many shipping points, international transport, or tightly scheduled delivery processes. In such structures, the shipper is closely integrated with transport management, order processing, outbound logistics, distribution planning, and often also with procurement or production logistics. Modern companies use digital systems such as ERP solutions, transport management systems (TMS), or shipping platforms to transfer transport orders, freight data, and shipment information to freight forwarders and carriers in a structured manner.

In short: The shipper is the party that initiates shipping and transport within the supply chain. They commission logistics service providers to carry out transport operations and, through their specifications, establish the operational foundation for cost-effective, predictable, and on-time shipment of goods.
