Transport Logistics

What is transport logistics?

Transport logistics refers to the movement of goods between suppliers, plants, warehouses, hubs, or customers. It encompasses the planning, control, execution, and monitoring of all transport processes within the supply chain, thereby linking individual locations into a functional network.

Transport logistics includes, among other things, the selection of suitable modes of transport, vehicle scheduling, route planning, coordination with carriers and freight forwarders, as well as the monitoring of transit times, shipment status, and transport costs. Unlike individual transport orders, transport logistics takes a holistic view of the flow of goods and integrates transports into an economically sound overall system.

Its relevance is high because transport processes have a direct impact on delivery reliability, vehicle utilization, service levels, and cost structure. Poor planning quickly leads to empty runs, unnecessary mileage, delays, or insufficient utilization of available capacity. Professionally managed transport logistics, on the other hand, helps to deploy transport resources more effectively, bundle routes, and organize shipments efficiently across the network.

Modern companies use transport management systems, telematics, and data-driven analytics to make their transport logistics more transparent and predictable. This transforms the mere transport of goods into a strategically relevant management function that improves efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and delivery performance throughout the entire supply chain.
